The Indian Head cent was minted by the United States between 1859 and 1909 in Philadelphia and San Francisco. San Francisco minted Indian Head coins features the "S" mint mark below the ribbon on the reverse. Designed by James B. Longacre, the Indian Head Cent replaced the short-lived Flying Eagle Cent because of minting problems with its design. The Indian Head Cent features Liberty wearing an Indian headdress, not an Indian. 1859 was the only year that Indian Head Cents were minted with a laurel wreath on the reverse. On all future Indian Head Cents, an Oak wreath was used.
