Three Cents (silver) The three cent silver coin was first minted in 1851 due to a decrease in postage rates to three cents and to answer the need for a small-denomination coin. This coin features a shield on a six sided star on the observe of Roman Numeral III on the back. The three cent silver coin was minted between 1851 and 1873 at the Philadelphia Mint.
